British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, located using intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of entry passages providing entry to the depot... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their courage," he added. "They were part of a great many British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces executed what it called a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
