Right-leaning reactions to the partial release of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how extensive redactions portray former President Trump and Republicans in a negative manner.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department officials justified the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so open with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo describing the redaction procedure.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While the former president's name and image are visible in some of the materials, the extensive redactions raise significant concerns about what may be concealed beneath them. A number of Republicans swiftly called for increased openness.
“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the law, and suggested that a future legislature may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this file dump egregiously does not adhere to both the intent and the letter of the law,” he added.
A Faction of Rightwing Figures Swing In Support of the Disclosure
However, a segment of conservative commentators and former President loyalists came out strongly behind the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a justice department run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are completely redacted, and numerous of the men depicted in pictures have their identities obscured.
But some do not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, allowed certain conservative voices to go on the offensive.
“This is pretty rich how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Clinton Spokesperson Issues Response
Clinton has consistently said he knew of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House has not been concealing these files for months only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from what they will try and hide forever. So they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photos as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.
Broader Rightwing Commentary Remains Muted
However, broader discourse on the right was relatively muted following the release, especially when compared with the vociferous demands for action that preceded the congressional approval to enact a bill mandating the documents' publication.
Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest advocates for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative personalities were provided physical binders of materials that included little previously unseen information.
