Meteorological Balloons Used to Illegally Transport Cigarettes Closed Lithuanian Airport

Recovered contraband balloons
No fewer than 11 of the weather balloons, transporting 18,000 packages of illegal cigarettes, have been collected so far

Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.

Air Travel Interruptions

The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.

National Security Measures

Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.

As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.

Contraband Recovery

No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.

Regional Smuggling Pattern

Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."

So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.

Regional Consequences

Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.

Smuggling Techniques

When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."

Law Enforcement Objectives

Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."

European Tensions

These airspace violations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.

Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
