Nepal's Political Scene Sees Major Alliance Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Discussions Underway

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of major political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
