A recent study reveals that people who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing these treatments should be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to original mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the heightened weight return.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
People who have stopped the medication describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Use
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
