Each time a major honors show approaches, there’s always an outcry for the addition fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything that year
- Another creative title was excluded in 2019
- A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
- Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences for the title of most purchased experience; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
